Our Story

Hey there, lovely moms and moms-to-be,

It’s Carol Lafferty here, CEO and Founder of KARE, and proud mom of my little bundle of joy, Mikayla.

Can we have a heart-to-heart mom talk for a moment?

So, here’s my story in a nutshell: I found my soulmate a little later in life, and let’s be honest, it took us quite a while to conceive.

By the time I got pregnant, I was firmly in the “geriatric mother” category (seriously, can we retire that term?). My pregnancy journey was nerve-wracking, to say the least. Besides being an “advanced maternal age” mom, I also have SLE (Lupus), which made it all the more stressful due to a higher risk of miscarriage.

I had a fantastic team of doctors supporting me throughout the pregnancy. They were amazing, but let’s be frank, even being “high-risk” meant that I could only see them once a month at most. So, the time in-between those visits was like a rollercoaster of fear and anxiety. Every week that passed was a reason to celebrate!

And then, finally, my little Mikayla arrived via c-section, and oh my goodness, I was head over heels in love. From that moment, I knew my entire purpose in life was to protect and care for her. All those months of worry and anxiety were replaced with a brand-new question: “Do I have what it takes to be the best mom for this little miracle?”

The postpartum days at the hospital were a whirlwind, but I felt so supported. Nurses and doctors were working around the clock to make sure my daughter and I were doing well. But, as all good

things come to an end, I was discharged with a bag full of medicine and told to come back in 8 weeks for the next doctor’s visit. Eight weeks?! What if something happens before that? Going from 24/7 medical care to zero professional support was no easy task.

To make matters more challenging, like many residents of Dubai, my husband and I are expats, and we had no family around to call on for help. COVID restrictions also meant my family couldn’t travel from Canada to be with us. Talk about feeling a bit overwhelmed!

A friend came to the rescue, suggesting we hire a “night nurse.” I hadn’t heard of this before, but it sounded like a lifesaver. Little did I know the ups and downs we would face finding the “right one”.

We reached out to multiple companies, and let’s just say it was an uneven road before we found the right path!

First off, some of the companies were completely disorganised and seemed to have forgotten what customer service even meant. It felt like I wasn’t a valued customer at all! Then, there were those agencies that hired nurses who seemed to be lacking in skills or worse, they were just not happy with their job and it was clear from the first moment we met! Seriously, who wants someone grumpy and unmotivated taking care of their precious baby?

And here’s the kicker – one nurse from a certain agency mishandled my then 6-day-old during a bathing incident. It was absolutely heart-wrenching, and it left us in a state of panic. We ended up taking shifts and physically supervising her all night long because we couldn’t bear the thought of risking anything else going wrong.

But, finally, after some trial and error, we found a true gem – a nurse/midwife with incredible skills, experience, and an abundance of compassion and emotional intelligence. She was like an angel sent from above, and she became an essential part of our family for five wonderful months. It was transformative for myself and Mikayla having her around each day.

The whole experience I had ignited a spark in me to create something incredible for other families out there. No mom should ever have to go through such a tough time. I mean, caregiving should be about more than just a job – it should be a calling, a passion. And that’s what KARE is all about!

At KARE, we’re committed to ensuring every caregiver on our team is not only skilled; but also genuinely caring and passionate about what they do. We want you to feel absolutely at ease, knowing that your baby is in the best hands possible. That’s our mission, and we won’t settle for anything less!

Though I might be a Neuroscientist and Biochemist by training, this endeavor was driven by love and passion. I approached it scientifically and assembled the finest team of experts not only in Dubai but across the globe to build a company that offers childcare and mother-care services, at a level of excellence unparalleled by anyone other than mom herself. Together, we’re here to take care of you and your little ones as if they were our own family. That’s my promise to you.

We strive for the absolute best, and that’s what sets KARE apart from the rest. So come join our family, and let’s make parenting an extraordinary journey together!
